New Year's Eve
I'm also going to experiment with uploading video clips in the next year. Who knows where that will go. Maybe possible tour and sound check clips, life on the road stuff. Maybe "the guitar lesson of the day" or something. Still throwing ideas together. I'm sure I'll come up with more entertaining things as well, nothing too serious though I promise!
I'm looking forward to getting into the new year. Lot's of work planned for '08. I'll have my hands full touring with Ottmar and Toto, recording and playing around town, trying to put my own band together and a few other projects. I'm also going to be checking my self into physical therapy for my neck and back. Over the years of constant traveling on tour, doing lighting, playing guitar and sitting in one position in a chair practicing for hours on end, my body has taken the toll. I've had problems with my back over the years and now this week my neck has been in a lot of pain for the last 4 days and getting a bit of tingling in my fingers from time to time. This has been a big wake up call for me. Interesting why we wait till the last min. on things isn't it? So my new years resolution will be to get my self back in good shape.
Best wishes to all and to have a wonderful new year!

Christmas Shopping Today
So, for those of you who know me, you probably know that I might not be the most graceful person on the planet. This is probably why I took up music and not ballet, Ok, moving right along here. When walking through the store, I accidentally knocked over a pile of twisters. You know, the game twister? Anyway, I stopped and started picking the games up and stacking them back on top of each other. At that point, some lady came over to me and asked if I worked there. I was speechless at first, I guess I was kinda caught off guard. I said, "no I don't, sorry." Then I started to kick my self thinking, man, I could have said something like,
"yes Ma'am, the item you need is on aisle 4!" ha
but it was too late. She then looked as if she didn't believe me and said sorry and started to walk away. She must have had second thoughts because she walked back, looked at me and said, "you know, I only asked because you just really look like you work here". She was looking at me and studied my expressions to see if I would smirk or something and say "ok, you got me, I work here" but I just felt puzzled. She then looked at me for another few seconds with a frustrated look on her face as if I was lying through my teeth and then said, "ok, sorry, I just thought you worked here because you look like you do" and officially walked away. I then looked down to see if I was wearing a red shirt with a name tag and tan pants like all the other employees wore. But much to my surprise I wasn't.
I then checked out, got in my vehicle and drove home. There are many other stories I could tell about that adventure but I'll leave you with this for now.

Hand over the guitar strings!
Hand over the guitar strings!
Originally uploaded by stromo.
Well, it has been a while since I've restrung a guitar. Actually, I wasn't planning on restringing however, the strings were getting really old so I thought I should probably put some new ones on. I thought, I'll turn the tv on and see whats on the news while I change strings. I looked around, no cats in sight. And usually, they take their cat nap around this time so I felt safe.
Next thing I knew, both cats (that's a new one) jumped up in front of me looking at the strings AND at me as if I were dinner! They both meant business this time as if they had a cat meeting before hand, so much for their nap. I didn't really know what they were going to do, although I was guarding the strings with my life. So, as one distracted me, the other ran off with some strings...
With minor cuts to my hands I was able to get the strings back and finish up.
Later in the day I had plans to play with a very talented violinist. We had a great time playing together and made plans for playing more in the future and possibly recording together.

THE 126th POST!
Yes, I know it's exciting isn't it. I just noticed that I was up to 125 posts and I had no idea how many posts I've done till now. However! It got me thinking a bit. It seems that people like to celebrate things with numbers like 10, 50 or 100 etc... For example, it's our 100th episode! or, our 10 year anniversary! Or, our 50th year reunion! So I thought, why not be different and celebrate with a random number. So here it is folks! the 126th post on this blog! ENJOY!

While I've been practicing this morning I came across THIS on the web and I would agree with what is said above. I would rather hear something that was slower but IN time then something that was fast and sloppy.
I would like to add - You can concentrate on control and accuracy as the techniques to build up speed and this doesn't just apply to Flamenco. Nothing wrong with having total control over your instrument. However, just because you can play fast doesn't mean you have to. I think fast guitar runs in music can get redundant very quickly if over used. Personally, I'd rather hear a pretty melody and an occasional fast guitar run here or there to get from point A to point B. Other wise fast guitar runs over and over and over in one piece just isn't special to me anymore. Of course, this is just my humble opinion, It really all comes down to personal taste.
above - Also has some nice guitar exercises, check it out.

Music for the soul...
Browsing through the 'Blogs of note' today, I chanced upon Stephen Duros' music. I haven't been too much into guitar music till now, but this particular genre changes that. Been playing Thira in loop since morning. Just don't know what it is about the music but... it certainly strikes a chord deep inside.
Just came across this post - Thanks for listening and for the nice comments.

Tuesday
Had a great conversation today with an old friend from school. We were taking about how certain music can take you back and remind you of a time in your life. I could probably name a handful of albums or songs that remind me of specific time and I'm sure you could too. Amazing how music can do that and I think that's why a certain song can be so special to someone.

Today
This afternoon I spent some time downloading and setting up new widgets on my computer. I got a bit carried away but it was fun. Now when I put the widget window up on the screen, it looks like a total command center with local and world weather, Doppler radar, world clocks and the position of the space station. Of course, knowing the position of the space station is important don't you think? I feel important when looking at these widgets, also informed! It's a win win situation.
Tonight I can hear the rain coming down outside, a pleasant sound. Just finished watching the making of the Amadeus movie, been wanting to watch that for a while now. well, the clock just struck 12 midnight and I believe I will retire for the evening. From looking at my widgets, I can tell you it's 7AM in London, the space station is over Australia and there is more rain on it's way here in New Mexico. Now for the 10 day forecast....
Hm, maybe I should re-title this blog -

Winter Rose
HERE and HERE are links to the album.
Liebert breathes new life into holiday favorites with sensitive, even haunting, arrangements of O Little Town of Bethlehem and O Holy Night. The CD also includes fresh interpretations of classical music, including Fauré's Pavane and Les Roses D'Isphahan and Tchaikovsky's Le Café from The Nutcracker. But perhaps the greatest delight are the six new songs written by Liebert especially for "Winter Rose," including Westcoast, The Longest Night, Kora/River of Stars, and A Sweet Persimmon. Each captures the essence of the season. The result is an album that is both familiar and inventive, heartwarming and evocative.

Random Thoughts by Stevo
2 -After I got home from South America, I've been sick. I was thinking about the time I saw something about animals in hospitals and how an animal can comfort you and help you heal. So I thought, since I'm not feeling good, I'll call Cosmo Kitty over to cuddle and comfort me so I can heal. I called her and she came trotting over. As I picked her up I said "Cosmo, my favorite kitty cat!" trying to gain some points. Apparently she sensed that I was sick and completely attacked me. Starting hissing, clawing and ran off. I thought right then and there, Cosmo might not be a good animal for healing people in hospitals.
3- As most of you know, traveling while being sick is no fun. Well, I had to travel on Wed. for the holiday weekend here and was worried about flying since my head has been so stuffy. I took some medicine and hoped it would help. I thought, maybe we won't fly so high. Well, when I was sitting there they announced that they were going to be up at 41,000 ft. AH! Who flys that high!! I don't remember the last time I've been up that high. So when it came time to come back down, this pilot must have been late for an appointment or something because I've never come down so fast! It was out of control, as if they knew that my head was supper stuffy, I was grabbing my head as I thought it was going to pop off from the pressure in my ears and then we started going down even faster. At that point I imagined that the two pilots were slapping high fives in excitement that they were descending so quickly. YEE HA! We finally landed and as soon as the wheels touched the pavement, they slammed on the breaks like super hard and made a quick right turn and it felt like they gave it full power to taxi. I've never been pushed back in my seat to taxi before, we were taxing faster then we did to take off it seemed, then raced up to the gate and quickly stopped. The capt. then made the announcement, "Folks we're 5 min. early WOO HOO!" I added the "woo hoo" part,he didn't say that but really, is there any point to be hotdoggin the plane like that? Maybe he misses landing on an aircraft carrier? However, it seems to be kinda of typical of the airline I was on.
4- Speaking of planes, while traveling on airplanes over the years I've noticed that there are "aisle seat people" and there are "window seat people". Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever met a "middle seat person", actually not sure if I would want to. For me, I've been a "window seat person" for as long as I can remember. I take my window seats very seriously.
Yes, the aisle seat can be nice especially if you like the convenience of getting up to get something in an over head bin or use the restroom. Oh wait! Should I say lavatory as they call it on the airplane? I do believe it serves the same purpose though. However, I can't tell you how many times my seat has been bumped by people walking past or with the food and drink carts. Especially when you try to sleep. It almost seems like everyone on the plane knows that your asleep and decides to get up and walk past and bump into your seat over and over again. I usually can't fall asleep in an aisle seat anyway, there is really no place to lean your head on. If you do fall asleep your head usually hangs there which isn't to comfy and you wake up with a super stiff neck. Or the only other option is to lean your head back, but what usually happens when people do that is, they'll fall asleep and then their mouth will hang wide open and will be snoring louder then the jets. I guess I may be a bit self conscious and don't want to be seen like that. So I'll try and look out the window from the aisle seat but the way my luck runs, the person sitting next to the window will pull their shade down. I can't tell you how many times that has happened and really, I try not to make it obvious that I'm looking in that direction. I'll sneak a look here and there. I think it's just not meant for me to have anything to do with the window.
As for the window seat, as it can be much harder to get out to the aisle, I like it so much better. I like to see what's going on outside the plane, take an occasional picture and listen to music while looking out at the clouds and landscapes. I also like to be left alone to have this time to my self and enjoy what's going on out side. The one thing you do have to worry about if you are like me is that random person that sits down next to you and wants to chat for hours. Hey, nothing wrong with a good conversation "Hey how are ya there, good to see ya" now back to enjoying my window seat. However, the enjoyment can go down hill real fast when that person keeps talking straight through the taxi down to the runway and through the take off! We're rolling down the runway fast as can be and I'm hearing "So, what do you do!!" all caffeinated up from the 3 cups of Starbucks coffee in the terminal, I'm thinking, I just want to look out the window right now.... please... Oh and you can bet the same thing will happen for landing. I don't want to be rude so I'll listen. I know you window seat people know what I'm talking about.... hm.. after re-reading this, I guess I do take my window seat seriously? Maybe I should say, a bit too seriously, oh well, everyone has their little quirks.

Home
Over all the trip was wonderful, a very busy travel schedule but always great to see new countries, meet new people and spend time with my friends in the band. The only thing that wasn't so great happened at the beginning of the tour. When I first arrived in my hotel room in Montevideo, Uruguay, I opened up my suit case and noticed that Cosmo Kitty left some going away presents for me. So I had to get a bunch of my clothes washed right away. Before I left on the trip, she wasn't too happy when I pulled out the suit case. She looked at the suit case and then looked up at me. She then jumped in it like usual and swatted at me as I tried to put clothes in there. This is the first time anything like this has happened so I'll have to make extra sure I pack in a cat free room next time. I've had a talk with her about what happened since I've been back.
Took pictures from the trip, Ill probably up load them in the next week or so on flickr.

Greetings from Sao Paulo
Had some of the best coffee on the planet today. Been having a great time in South America on the Toto tour. Got to meet Mario Parmisano in Buenos Aires, Argentina who is an amazing pianist and a really great guy. Also when I was at a club in Santiago, Chile, Luke introduced me to Steve Vai and his band. First time meeting Steve and he is really nice, the band guys were great as well. Steve asked me to say hi to Ottmar. We all had a great hang and a local band played a 45 min. set of nothing but Toto songs, it was a trip. The place was packed and we were being bombarded with tons of photos, crazy night.
We´ve been crossing pathes with Bjork through out the whole tour. In Buenos Aires, I walked across the street to check out her light rig and it looked really cool. Lots of lazer lights with mirrors all over the truss. Wish I could have seen the show. In Santiago, I didn´t realize I was standing next to her in the lobby till someone told me. We´ll cross pathes again in Lima. Speaking of Lima, flying to Peru later today so I must get going so I can get all packed up. 5 hour flight.
And yes, I must listen to Ottmar´s song ´´Sao Paulo´´ while I´m here. (also one of my favorite songs to play in the live set.)
Till next time -

Wow, I was blown away. Beautiful and emotional melodies, arrangements where you think your heading down one path, the song transforms and the music then takes you on a completely different journey. Can't wait to hear the entire album.
Mark your calenders for this one, it's going to be an amazing musical journey.

I've been friends with the guys at the shop for a long time now and they set up a time for me to stop by after the store closed Friday evening since I arrived in the mid afternoon. When I walked in, Armand had all the new flamenco guitars out on stands. I wish I could go back and walk in again, it was an amazing feeling seeing everything out and knowing they were for me to try. I definitely felt like a kid in a candy store.
There were some beautiful choices. Pegs, no pegs, Blancas, Negras. etc.. I tried a new archtop Blanca, (never heard of that before) amazing tone, very crisp and bright.
I've been very happy with my G.V.R. blanca, I've been playing it for the last 11 years. It has done a great job on the album Thira and previous recordings. So this time, I knew I wanted something a bit different, maybe darker sounding then my blanca for the next album and for playing live. so I went right for the Negras and picked this one out. I really liked the feel of the neck and the tone. I fell in love with it right away as It seemed to have a great vibe, played great and looked beautiful. I was sold.
And of course it wasn't over yet, we then had chips + salsa and invited some great friends down with their Vazquez Rubio flamenco guitars along with Jason Shapiro who played the percussion on my first CD. We had a great time playing and It was by far the best way pick out a new instrument. I guess if you want to be a part of the hang, you'll have to get one of these guitars first!
Thanks again to everyone at the guitar shop, especially German.

Sept. 25 / So this is Christmas...
Once you walked in, you couldn't help but notice the enormous section of the store in full Christmas glory. I stood there for a second and waited for carolers to come up and start singing me a tune. OK now, isn't it mid September? Maybe Late September? Wait! it's Sept. 25, how appropriate, exactly 3 months away. What about Halloween or Thanksgiving? It does seem like every year it gets a bit sooner doesn't it? If I owned a store, I'd bypass all of that and out do everyone! I'd start putting up the 4th of July decorations now! Cool huh, I like to think that I'm an advanced thinker. (no pun intended) Really though, I think there should be an intergalactic rule that won't allow you to set up the holiday stuff till after Thanksgiving, but thats me. Anyway, not sure about you guys, but I'm not ready for Christmas yet. I'm just getting ready for fall actually.
Once I got past that section, I went on my way to find the glue. As always, there were the usual things happening in a typical arts and crafts store. The random breaking of a Christmas ornament off in the distance, the couple with a super full shopping cart arguing over which color ribbon would go along better, the dude with the mustache wearing camouflage in the model train section, the PA announcements "customer needs assistance in the ribbon isle", oh, and lets not forget the smooth jazz muzak rocking out super loud and then me, lost as ever trying to find the Krazy glue. I was looking around the store for days, I was hoping there would be a huge sign saying, "KRAZY GLUE HERE" but that wasn't the case. I ended up in a section with little buttons and strings. I'm sure my cats would have liked that section.
I finally came across the glue section and picked up a few packs and then headed to check out. There was one long line and one not so long. So I went into the one that was not so long. HA! I'll check out quicker here, I thought. Then realized I was behind that person that decided to write a personal check. Amazing what process goes into it, really. I didn't realize anyone used those anymore. After they finished writing it, the cashier had to take the check and put it through this machine. After it went through there, the cashier went digging in a drawer and pulled out some paperwork and starting flipping through it, looking up some code or something. Then started to write something on the back of the check. After that was taken care of, the person started to write and record the check in their checkbook.
By the time that was over, the other check out line had completely disappeared. I quickly purchased my items and went on my way to El Parasol to take home some New Mexican food. I was so hunger my stomach did the deciding for me. For some reason I thought that ordering a Pint of Salsa and Guacamole was a good idea along with a burrito. I got home and realized that the sizes looked much smaller in the store. It looked as if I almost had two gallons of guac and salsa sitting on my table. By the time I had a nibble I was completely full. I guess I'll have plenty more for later.
All in all a good day, a bit Krazy but not enough to bother me. The weather is beautiful, fall definitely feels like it's here. I could be wrong but I thought I saw a few trees just starting to turn colors up in the mountains.
How appropriate....

Thankfully they didn't hear me do my vocal impression. Then again, maybe they did.

What are my CD’s doing lately?
Are CD’s going to be here in the future? Probably not, unless we think that 8 tracks and cassettes will be around too? There is one format that I like to look back on and enjoy, vinyl records. I do like the sound of them and they brings back good memories. Well, maybe more of the memories then the sound, who knows. I have a few records that I have kept and a few that I have picked up from time to time. Not that I want an enormous collection, not at all. Just a few, that will do it for me. Speaking of a few, not the case with my CD’s. I just don't know what to do with them anymore?
I really don’t like the space they take up. When I open my CD cabinet, it looks like an old CD scrap yard with parts, sleeves, plastic shells here and there. What if they get scratched? Then you have to buy some expensive cleaner product that probably wont fix your CD half the time and then go out and purchase the same CD again. You might be thinking, then don’t keep them in that condition, right? Well, after I transferred all of those CD’s into my iPod (that fits in the space of my hand), who really cares anymore. I don’t feel any attachment to the pieces of plastic that sit there. “Steve... please come visit us, dust us off!!" "Sorry CD’s, I’m busy listening to my iPod!"
CD’s vs. Downloads.
"CD’s are the real recordings and Downloads aren’t" I’ve heard this argument many times before. I understand that we’ve been in a time of CD’s for what, since 89 or something? Not sure. Point being, they’ve been the main format for quite some time now. It’s nice to hold the product in your hand. I enjoy holding my album in my hand, I’m very proud of it. However, I think it’s time to let go and move on. I don’t feel it’s a shame my music isn’t available on Cassette. Definitely not thinking about doing a video for VHS. Think about all the fuel that it takes for CD’s to get to a store near you when you could just download it anytime and just about anywhere. I guarantee that you’ll never come across a site saying -
DOWNLOAD STORE CLOSED
HOURS - MONDAY - FRIDAY 9AM to 5PM
CLOSED ON ALL HOLIDAYS
HAVE A NICE DAY :)
The Listening Lounge is amazing. Ottmar can go into the studio, throw down some hot tracks, mix + master and upload it in the same day for people to purchase. Are you still thinking a CD is more of a real recording? I think we should realize how amazing this really is! People can go to the artist and purchase the music directly. You won't need the iTunes store for that. With the Listening Lounge you even get more options then iTunes. Sometimes it’s hard to adjust and get used to new things however music downloads are here now. lets face it, we’re not in the 80’s anymore. I think we should embrace this technology and realize that it’s ok for music to not be on a compact disk.

Almost a typical morning at my place
Got up around 7:30 am. Beautiful day out, windy and chilly actually, maybe fall is here? Yesterday it had been raining all day so everything feels very clear and crisp this morning.
I got the guitar out and set up ready for practice time.
And of course, most importantly, getting the coffee started immediately!
Then sat down and checked my email while sipping coffee. Turned on CNN to see what's going on in the world today. Then after a few min, realized, why am I watching this and turned the TV off. Same drama, different day. With all that's going on in the world, they seem to find it more important to go on and on about what Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton are doing. I then decided against ordering the CNN coffee mug.
Time to practice, so I walk over to my guitar and Cosmo is sitting on my chair. Probably wanting her usual morning petting and maybe she has a feeling I'm about to start practicing instead. Thought I would try things a bit different today. I really want to get practicing because there is a lot I want to improve on, then I thought I'd pet her afterwards.
Before I started to practice I thought I would take a close up picture of her by the guitar for memory's sake and she smiles for the camera?? I don't know any normal cat that would do that, I really think Cosmo is from another planet, either that or putting on a show because she wanted her petting. I know, cute kitty right? purr purr..smiles for the camera.. BUT! I won't let this distract me from getting my quality practice time in, I know her too well, nice try Cosmo!
Getting her to hop off of the chair was no simple task, but I finally got my seat back and started practicing with the metronome and timer. I like to practice in 5 min increments. That way my muscles don't get too tired doing the same thing over and over. Also, that way I can keep things consistent day after day. I highly recommend trying it.
so after a few min. I look down and she's there giving me this look, and now I start to feel guilty.
Then she threw a fit and started tugging and biting my clothes! so I said, Ok, OK... And put the guitar aside.
As soon as I did that, she jumped in my lap and got her morning petting.
So, from now on - 1st, morning petting, then, practice guitar.
Of course lets not forget about Herbie (he's the quiet one behind the scenes) he needed his morning petting too.
So maybe routine is not such a bad thing? Yes, a valuable lesson learned.
Now, on to practicing!

The Fritz Files - Snakecharmer-Binaural
I'm sure most of you have seen this on OL's site, but just in case you haven't, check it out. The Fritz Files/Binaural music from OL+ Luna Negra is now available at the Listening Lounge.
It was a great experience recording with "Fritz" in the studio. It took a bit of getting used to. At first, when we were all sitting around the mic playing, it seemed normal. Then when you start to move, it gets tricky. During Snakecharmer, I stayed planted on my chair. However during a few of the other tunes, I moved to different places in the studio.
The hardest part for me was when Davo and I were at complete opposite ends of the studio. The time delay was really different. To me it sounded like Davo was behind, but to Davo, it sounded like I was behind. Now, picture that and then Jon and Ottmar in the middle between us, then imagine the different sounds traveling to my ears at different times, you do the math. It can be confusing. It wasn't a big time difference, just slight, but enough to make you say... wait a sec, somethings not right here? I had to quickly adjust and learn how to listen differently then what I'm used to on stage. I had to really concentrate on only my playing at certain times and playing in time even though I didn't hear other instruments in time with me. Following me so far?
When I play live with the band, since we all have in-ear monitors, we don't have to worry about how far apart we are. I spend more time listening to everyone else then my self, I still hear my self but it's not the main focus although it can be, For example: If my string starts to go slightly out of tune, I will be listening to my guitar trying to figure out which string it is and think about what part of the song I'll have a chance to quickly reach up to tune to try and get it back to where it needs to be. Other wise, I'm panning around listening to everything, espically Davo's kick and perc. When everything's clickin, I can just zone out and then it feels like magic.
In my in-ear monitors, I have my guitar panned off to the right at about 2 o'clock and OL, left at 11. Davo's kick and Jons bass are in the center and the rest of the percussion panned all around with Davo's over head mic's panned hard left & right. There has been times in sound check where davo has talked close to his right over head mic and I've quickly looked to my right but he isn't there. Funny how quickly you react to what you hear instead of what you know. So in the studio, as Ottmar said in an earlier post on his diary, we all learned to listen differently and very intently.
After the studio sessions, I too was walking around hearing every little thing. A bird chirp, a car off in the distance etc. It's like when you jump on a trampoline, after you get off of it, you still feel like your jumping up and down. It only lasts for a little while. Although, when I was mixing Thira, I think It was about 2 or 3 weeks, I don't remember, but man... You're so in tune with every little neuance and because it was over a concentrated time, that feeling did last for quite a while after words and at times drove me a bit crazy, It was like everything was amplified.
I hope everyone enjoys the new recordings!

Nice work Flaca!! Thanks.
ADDED NOTE: Ah, I stand corrected, there actually is a Cosmo kitty fan club HERE

Gear Vs. Creativity
Gear Vs. Creativity.
Question: What gear did you buy to get that guitar tone and the over all sound on the Thira Album?
Answer: I spent more money on coffee then on gear during the recording of the Thira album. One mic, one keyboard, one guitar, lots of coffee.... oh, and a few percussion toys.
Yes, new gear can always be a helpful tool. However, it is just that, a tool, and it can only get you so far. Point being, the sound comes from you and knowing your instrument. The long hours of practice, spending time on song writing and working out arrangements. Time, rhythm, working on playing in the pocket. And, something that I think is very important, knowing your limitations and not trying to out do your self. Nothing wrong with pushing your self and practicing to become a better player, but trying to play and record stuff that you can’t is another thing. Remember, less is more. (I've been playing guitar for 18 years now and I'm still working on all of the above)
Also, sometimes you may not always have the opportunity to get new gear and you'll need to be creative with what you have.
Hm, maybe I should have called this entry, Gear Vs. Coffee??

Last show of the summer tour
Birchmere Theater - Alexandria, VA

Backstage right now and they just brought us a fresh batch of cookies from the kitchen. I'm having a large chocolate chip cookie and they totally ROCK!! Still warm too, I must to go back for a second one.
Slightly injured my hand this morning and had ice on it all day. It was a bit painful at sound check but I think it will be ok for the show tonight.
I can't believe it's the last show of the summer. I have no idea where the time went. All of the shows back in June are just a blur now. I'm happy I took a lot of pictures.
I think I'll give the guitar a few days off when I get home, it deserves a break. It will be good to be home for a while and not travel for a bit. I think I've only been home for a week since I left in early June.
Fall plans for me? Well, I think I'll start recording all the ideas I've written this summer. Also want to get into writing some Electronica music and see where that goes. In the mid fall I'll be traveling all around South America with the band Toto to do some lighting. I'll be able to add more pins in the map with that tour.
Special thanks to all the great fans that came out to see us this summer! See you again soon

About 15 min. before walking on stage I accidentally hit my thumb into something and the acrylic nail cracked off. Not good. So I quickly had to repair it before we started. It just finished drying right as I went on stage.
During the first half of the set I looked over and saw that Ottmar was having trouble with his in-ear monitors. I wouldn't have known if I didn't look over because the guitar playing was great.
Speaking of great..... great crowd and a big standing ovation, thanks everyone!! Besides it being way too bright on stage (not so great) I thought the performance went really well and enjoyed playing to such a great audience.

The show at B.B.'s last night was fun. It's great to be back in New York City. I love this town. I've already had Pizza a few different times. Have to get my fix before I head back out west. Haven't had internet the last few days so today I was finally able to up date my Journal page a bit. I posted pictures from the last few shows as well.
Leaving in 20 min to head down to B.B.'s for our second night.
Have to get some practicing in before show time.

Like Ram's Head in Annapolis, Another evening with an intimate setting. It must be great for people to be able to sit so close all around and watch the band play. I've been enjoying this setting a lot the last few nights. A different feeling then playing in a big performing arts center. I feel more in touch with the audience here although I do enjoy both settings very much.

At the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center back stage. Just got in from making a phone call. The only place I could find signal was in this empty lot next to the theater. As I was on the phone, these girls across the street were playing "autumn leaves" through a small PA and it was really good! They couldn't have been much older then 15 or 16. Walking bass line and full jazz chords and octaves for the lead melody. I heard a few chords in there that I don't know haha. Looks like I'll have to practice a bit more!
Looking forward to tonights performance -

During the show when it came time for my electric solo, i looked down and saw that my guitar was not plugged in. So I plugged it in and then looked at the other end and that wasn't plugged in either! So I tried not to be too obvious as I slowly and quietly plugged in both ends (of course in full spot light) But I was able to hit the first note on time with no problems and I was very happy with what I played. I would have felt like a super dork if I had hit that first note and nothing came out.
Here in West Hampton now, about to sound check -

Beautiful evening, the weather was perfect and the crowd was fantastic. I remember looking over and seeing all the boats pulled up along side watching the show as well. Really cool venue to play.
Little did we know that a few hours from then, (around 3am) we would all be lined up standing on the pavement in the middle of nowhere for 45 min while Boarder Patrol had their way with us for no reason.
Click on the photo above to see more shots from the show (thanks James for the nice photos!)

Tonight
Welcome to our world
No chance of finding coffee once we got to the gig. No matter how hard I prayed to the Coffee Gods, I walked around for an hour but it just seemed impossible to find a place. The only thing around was a Quiznos, so I settled for a sandwich.
Just got set up and will be sound checking shortly.

On the tour bus now and we're getting ready to back out and depart to Santa Anna. Thinking about watching Apollo 13 in the bunk, but I'm not sure yet. We have a small fish on the tour bus. I think someone rescued it at the county fair yesterday in Ventura and will be taking back to Santa Fe to give it a nice home. Maybe he can be the new Luna Negra mascot, well, at least for now. I named it "Harvey".

Not the only one on vacation...
New England this time of the year is wonderful. The weather is beautiful and it's a great place to go hiking, canoeing and to sit out on the deck and write new song ideas. Now that the upcoming tour dates are right around the corner, I decided to change strings and get that over with so I don't have to think about it when I get home to Santa Fe.
I thought it was a good idea until I rememberd that Cosmo "America's favorite kitty" is also on vacation up here in New England. You would think there would be plenty for a cat to do up here in these parts but as usual, as soon as I opened a fresh pack of strings, I look down and there she is.
Lately she's been doing this thing where she waits at the end of the fret board to grab the strings as they come off but I know whats going on, I'm not fooled by this. Cute kitty right? Meow meow... purr purr. Really though, she is a ferocious string eating feline in disguise!! So I'm totally prepaired to out smart her this time.
But as a new string goes on, out of no where she leaped up like Jaws out of the water and completely landed an all out assault!! Totally took me off guard. Usually she starts batting the strings a bit here and there but not this time.
As I started to get up and away from the attack, she ran off with a new string from the pack. Again I had to chase her around the place and then she stood on the string and wouldn't give it back. Believe me, you don't want to reach for the string at this point. So I tried to play nice. Here kitty kitty..... Please note the look on her face below, she wasn't about to fall for the "here kitty kitty" bit.
I grew up with a big dog and it was simple, you throw the ball, the dog runs. This is a bit more complicated. It seems like she had this one planned out for a while. Hm.... Until next time...

The Music Lesson Of The Day - Chord Technique
For example: I'll do this during the song "Underworld" and in "Sao Paulo" as I have to play one chord for a long period of time while Ottmar plays over it and it saves my hand from cramping up.

Solar Music Fest - Taos

Today we played at the Music Fest in Taos. Interesting day as we were only able to sound check guitars.
During the show the sun started to come over roof of the stage and by the middle of the set we were completely in the sun light. It had to be about 104 degrees on that stage. The surface of the stage was black and we were wearing black clothes. (Didn't help the situation) At one point Ottmar had to put a shoe on to touch his pedal board for his electric guitar. I think you could have fried an egg on there.
All in all, the crowd was great and seemed to enjoy the set very much. Next time I think I'll bring an umbrella to play under.

I walked around a bit today after we pulled up to the venue. I happened to stop in a coffee shop that Ottmar and Jon were sitting in. I took a quick pic of OL (here), grabbed my coffee went on my way to the Market Place.
This is my second time here and the weather has been beautiful both times, I've been lucky. Great view of Mt. Rainier today.

Last few days -
Nice shows at the Nugget Casino the last few nights. Great conversations with some fans afterwards.
The show in Fresno was great as well. Although during the performance, I noticed that a part of my nail chipped off and started snagging on the strings, total drag when that happens. Had to quickly switch to using my thumb to play the counter melody in Sao Paulo. I've made sure that I have a nail file sitting next to me during the show incase that happens again.
I've noticed that my 007 Casino Royal Dvd has been quite popular on the bus!

Tonight's show in Petaluma, CA
Comparing tonights show to the one at the Mountain Winery -
I had a lot of fun tonight and there were many great moments. Looking over at Ottmar smiling in my direction, the same with Jon - having some great musical moments, the great crowd.
At the Mountain Winery, the vibe was incredible- Having a great taste of wine before walking onto the stage. Playing outside in the perfect temperature in a beautiful setting at sunset as the night grew darker and darker. Feeling so calm and in the zone like you can't hit a bad note. A tasteful light show, feeling a sprinkle of light showering down behind, silhouetting me. The glow of the LED candles in the red light as Davo was the only one lit up during his solo. Playing Sao Paulo as I look around at the audience, trees, stars, feeling goose bumps. At the end of the show standing in front of 1,500 screaming fans asking for one more song! Talking with a few fans/friends after the show with great conversation and a glass of wine. With that being said, I wish I could figure out how to take that night, turn it into a powder and snort it up everyday. What a wonderful experience.
On the bus now heading to Fresno, CA.

Today I've updated a few flickr photos from the last show and for some reason, I can't seem to upload the photos I took of San Francisco into iPhoto. Not sure why? Bummer.
Bus call is at 11 tonight. I'm thinking about getting a quick bite and sitting by the harbor to watch the ships go by before I get packed up to head down to the bus.
Looks like we have 5 shows in a row starting tomorrow -

Some great friends of mine are coming to visit and see the show. Jason Shapiro, who played percussion on my first album, Chris Torrey and James Brummett. All helped immensly on that project and did a wonderful job. Really happy they're coming to see the show tonight.
